were able to legally marry. there were more than 140 people that registered to marry today at seattle's city hall. seattle mayor mike mcginn is calling it a great and joyous day that is seeing a new civil right being recognized. sixteen local judges volunteered to officiate the weddings today up until five p-m.there could soon be a final decision on whether or not same-sex marriage will be allowed here in california. the supreme court decided this week to review the state's voter approved ban. justices will also hear a related case concerning the defense of marriage act. kron 4's dan kerman takes a look at what this all means. >> i now declare you spouses for life. >> same-sex couples will have to wait a little bit longer to tie the knot in california at the u.s. supreme court to review proposition 8, the voters approved a ban on same-sex marriage means legal briefs will be filed in the case will be argued early next year. >> is one simple question does that constitute permit same-sex marriage port equal protection for everyone? for equal protection or not. >> uc hastings law professor

mention a little bit of his past. he was born in 1952 in the beacon hill neighborhood of seattle, washington. his parents immigrated to the u.s. from china and the 1930's. his father fought in world war ii and worked as a cook. he passed away when the mayor was 15. his mother was a seamstress and a waitress. mayor lee has five siblings, he graduated from college in maine, he also went to uc- berkeley law school and finished in 1978. he and his wife have two daughters. i also want to mention, prior to becoming mayor, one of the key points in his contributions to the community is after he completed law school, he worked as a managing attorney for the san francisco asian law caucus, where he was an advocate for affordable housing and the rights of immigrants and renters. mayor lee -- [applause] >> thank you. welcome to city hall. the people's city hall, san francisco. i want you all to note that that was such a wonderful rendition of our national anthem. please give another applause to the millennium -- melanie and her daughter. i am so excited about all of you and seen so many of y

nfc picture looks like this. san francisco and seattle both won. so the 49ers remain a game and a half up on the seahawks in the nfc west while the giants win keeps them one game up on the cowboy ps and the redskins in the east, green bay is now a game ahead of chicago. those two teams will meet at soldier field next week. let's bring in tony dungy. what do you make of the packers after tonight? >> well, you can hear the excitement in aaron rodgers and tramon williams' voice. they do have a lot to be excited about, that defense will get better when they wood woodson and matthews back. what they have to be fired up about is finding that run game tonight. we know what rodgers can do, but they got a big lift from alex green early in the game, then ryan grant, the guy they brought back, gave them a little spark on the big drive to clinch the game. and aaron rodgers said dujuan harris could be special. if they're running the ball like this getting 150, 160 yards to rush the game, they'll be hard to stop. >> atlanta lost to carolina today. their second loss. i don't know what that tells us.

person's stories. once he visited me in seattle. i took him to visit an elderly friend in a nursing home. as we waited, chris started wandering, chatting up the other residents in their wheelchairs. soon he came back and said, anne, you have to meet this guy. he is a judge. he has the best history, so interesting. we would get into an elevator in the department store. by the time we got off he would be chatting with the other riders in french. [ laughter] >> where did this come from? i think from our grandfather, chief stevens. known for his wide-eyed optimism he was a popular grass valley high school history teacher, very famous for telling stories and jokes. we would go to the grocery store or coffee shop and he would know everyone there and have a story and joke for each person. chris really took to this. i can picture him in the markets of cairo, joking with vendors, smiling, enjoying their stories. chris was chief stevens gone global.
